Cortland Ninth at Rain-Shortened Martin/Wallace Invitational

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland women's golf team finished in ninth place out of 15 teams at the Martin/Wallace Invitational, hosted by the Red Dragons at the Cortland Country Club.
 
The tournament was originally scheduled to be held on Saturday and Sunday, but rainy conditions led to the cancellation of Saturday's action. The tournament was reduced to 18 holes on Sunday, still in rainy weather that included a brief lightning delay in the middle of the afternoon.
 
Cortland finished with a team score of 343. Williams won the tournament with a 297, followed by NYU with a 302 and Amherst with a 303. The 15-team field included four nationally ranked teams - Williams (4th), Amherst (14th), Hamilton (21st) and Middlebury (23rd).
 
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) and Kristina Visniesky (Buffalo/Orchard Park) were part of a tie for 38th place in the 84-golfer field with scores of 84 on the par-72 course. Sarah Wiggins (Carson City, NV/Carson) tied for 41st place with an 85.
 
Pia Aguilar (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Highland) and Mimi Rienzo (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) were among a group tied for 54th place, each with a 90. Aguilar was an individual entry. Rachel Curatolo (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) tied for 62nd with a 93 and Kara Dumas (Jefferson/Gilboa-Conesville) tied for 65th with a 96. Nalinda Wankipun of NYU was the tournament medalist with a one-under par 71.
 
Cortland returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the Amherst Jack Leaman Invitational.
