Cortland Places 16th at Amherst Jack Leaman Invitational
SOUTH HADLEY, MASS. - The Cortland women's golf team finished in 16th place at the Amherst College Jack Leaman Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday at the Orchards Golf Club.
Cortland finished with a 357 on Saturday and a 351 on Sunday for a final score of 708. Wellesley won the team title with a 608 (300-308), followed by Amherst (299-315-614). A total of 17 teams competed.
Sarah Wiggins (Carson City, NV/Carson) was Cortland's top finisher in a tie for 74th place. She recorded an 88 on the opening day and an 86 on the second day for a 174. Wiggins birdied two holes on Saturday. Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) opened with a 92 on Saturday and improved to an 85 Sunday for a 177 and a tie for 77th place. Winterberg birdied two holes on Sunday. Amherst's Jessica Huang was tournament medalist with an even-par 144 that included a 69 on Saturday.
Rounding out Cortland's five team-scoring entries were Kristina Visniesky (Buffalo/Orchard Park) in a tie for 81st place (87-92-179), Mimi Rienzo (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) in a tie for 84th place (93-88) and Pia Aguilar (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Highlands) in 91st place (90-101-191). Aguilar's rounds included a birdie on Sunday.
Cortland will compete at the Northeast Women's Golf Conference (NWGC) Championship on April 27-28 at The Edison Club in Rexford, N.Y. The Red Dragons have won the last four NWGC titles, including the last two that resulted in NCAA Division III Championship automatic berths.
